Regarding your role as BraunPrize jury member: What do you find most suspenseful about the BraunPrize?
I think it is what the young students are interested in at the moment. What they think about the world because that is reflected in their work. I am waiting for seeing the projects to get the overview of the shifts in design.

How does the BraunPrize rank among other design prizes in your eyes?
I think it is the leading competition for young designers in the world. And I appreciate very much the company policy to carry on the competition during all these years. It requires also the commitment of the top management level to succeed in making this kind of highly valuated competition. Speacial thanks also to Peter Schneider because he has continously develop the competition to the extent that it is today. I know it is not an easy task from the reality of my own work within design promotion.

How do you go about evaluating the submissions?
My criteria is very much the same than those of the Braun design team. I am looking for innovation but at the same time the evolution of the design. It means that even the new thing has to be understandable and easy to "read". It should enhance the quality of the life and also bring joy and beauty to everyday life. I think that best design is timeless and durable. I do not believe only in trends and disposability of design. Design entertainment is not for my taste. For us Finns, design has always been a serious matter!

What designs do you think especially highly of?
As I already said I love classics, like Alvar Aalto, Arne Jacobsen, Braun, all products that are functional yet at the same time esthetically appealing. But also young designers can do timeless things, I know many young designers who share that kind of approach in their work. They have a new interpretation of the old "form follows function" slogan and it does not have to be a bit boring!

Do you know Alexander Manu from Canada, the second external juror?
Yes, I know him but not personally. He has a great reputation among international design community. I think I can easily share his opinions about good design.
