Interview - with Anne Stenros Managing Director, Design Forum Finland and Jury member of the BraunPrize 2003
She studied architecture in Finnland and CA (USA). Doctorate at the Helsinki University of Technology in 1992, lecturer since 1999. Managing Director of the Design Forum Finland since 1995. Editor-in-chief of "Form Function Finnland" and the yearbook "Design in Finland". She will be one of the invited jurors at the14th BraunPrize. During a visit to Braun's headquater in Kronberg and the factory in Marktheidenfeld in December 2002 , she spoke with the BraunPrize team and answered questions regarding the BraunPrize.

When and how did you decide to work for design as you studied Architecture?
I grew up with design since my mother is an interior architect and designer and my father an architect. I was always surrounded by Finnish design in many ways and it was a topic of discussion during the family dinners. After finishing my doctorate in architecture I applied for the Finnish Society of Craft and Design, namely Design Forum Finland as a managing director - and here I still am.

What was the most interesting project you worked for as Managing Director of the Design Forum Finnland?
At the moment we have a very challenging project going on. It is the new information center for architecture, design and construction (ARMI). We had an open architectural competition for the project and the location is in the very heart of Helsinki, in the harbour area. Hopefully we will move to the brand new building in 2006...

The Braun Prize Competition always attracts a lot of entries from all over the world, but a disproportionately small number from Canada and the US. What do you think is the reason for this?
I think that Scandinavian and European countries are more design oriented and design concious what comes to their history. Also the Asian countries have understood that design is one of the copetition factors in the global market. There is also a trend in Europe that design is a lifestyle thing - what I have not noticed in USA. All in all I think that young students in Europe are more aware of the power of design within consumer goods as well as lifestyles.
